Abstraction- more or less

Students traveling to Dublin for the painting symposium should arrive at NCAD, Harry Clarke Lecture Theatre, for 10am.

A couple of interesting links to whet your appetites:
Merlin James exhibition currently at Douglas Hyde Gallery:

And slightly less related to the day's events, but with interesting links to the notion of abstraction/ figuration: a fantastic show towards the end of last year of Roberto Matta-Echaurren works and concepts at the Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid (Matta had formed a strong friendship with Marcel Duchamp, despite the latter's abandonment of painting by that stage.)

Image and Object

Year 2 students are asked to think about their respective painting practices in relation to 'the object.' This will form the basis of the group crits in Week 10 after Easter. Please refer to handout and research the specific examples given: James Rosenquist's 'Capillary Action II', Nigel Cooke's show at Andrea Rosen in 2009, Sarah Sze and Giorgio Morandi. Think about the possibilities of  'the object' in relation to your own work.
